No
doubt about this saying “you are what you eat.” there is no one on this earth
who is living without food. No matter who you are, you can't survive without
food.
What is Diet?
Diet is the usual food and drink consumed by an organism (person or animal) to bring a healthy living. On the spiritual angle, diet is the word of God that we take into our lives to make us grow spiritually and
strong in our daily Christian living.
As Christians, what we put in our minds by way of our eyes, our ears, and the things that come out of our mouths, have the potential to nourish or deplete us spiritually. Having known this fact, one needs to constantly feed his or her mind with the word of God to get nourished. The word of God is so rich that every good thing that one will think of is embedded in it.
There are lots of foods that have no nutritional value and are filled up with harmful substances that can easily choke someone's life. This kind of food is called junk food. Similarly, there are a lot of things we are exposed to every day that are spiritual junk food. They reduce our strength in God; they make us weak and not being able to fight the devil in times of trials and tribulations. Such spiritual junk foods are - negatives things we often think about, worldly music, movies, books and the likes of others.
We need to think about the things we think about, the books we read and the movies we watch - including television programs. Most of them are corrupt, they are not healthy for the spiritual growth of the body, and they often lead us out of the way. At first, it may seem as if it doesn't matter, but with time, they will bring negative changes in you. The effect of junk food is not always seen initially until after some time.
Let's not be conformed to the things of this word; but rather be transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2). We renew our mind each time we read and mediate on the word of God - the bible.
Joshua 1:8 says “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shall meditate there in day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shall make thy way prosperous, and then thou shall have good success.” There is need for us to meditate on the word of God, not just reading or speed reading it like some people does. We meditate by pondering on it, take one or two verses, think it over and over again, and ask for God’s wisdom and understanding. We also renew our mind by listening to godly sermon and music, by doing so, we are fulfilling Philippians 4:8 which says “..., whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
We must keep our eyes on the Word at all times. A great way to do this is to make it the top priority of our day. Since the eyes are one of the gateways to the heart, by studying the Word first thing in the morning and looking at scriptures during the day, we plant it in our hearts. The more we do this, the more we will be built up on the inside and equipped to handle the challenges of life.
